Apart from warming the hearts of millions of people around the world and becoming superstars, they are all men. And not that the music industry would be sexist, but how many women were recognized for their talent of playing the guitar? We believe in gender equality, and this is why we decided to make a list of the most successful female guitarists to balance the scale a little bit.
Coming from Australia, she started playing the guitar at a young age and became professional by the time she was 15 years old. Some of her most notable gigs include playing in the Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Music Festival and opening for Steve Vai. Years later, in 2009, she performed at the Grammy Awards as Carrie Underwood’s solo guitarist, which really put her on the map of the most talented guitarists.
She ended up impressing Michael Jackson and was hired in his band with whom she played until the singer’s tragic death in 2010.
One of the most recognized and appreciated female guitarists of modern times, Batten took the long road to success. She played in various bands with different styles from hard rock to jazz until she was offered the position of the lead guitarist for Michael Jackson. She performed along the artist in all three of this worldwide tours from 1987 to 1997.
Much to your surprise, the beloved Monica from TV show Friends didn’t try to reinvent herself by playing the guitar. We are talking about another talented artist who, at only 28 years old, already is an outstanding metal player in the band The Iron Maidens. Mother Maybelle Carter
Does the name Johnny Cash ring a bell to you? If so, you should know that Mother Maybelle Carter was his mother-in-law. The guitarist is known for her unique techniques of playing the guitar and for creating various styles such as church lick or thumb brush. Inspired by the banjo techniques, Carter lived to become a renowned guitarist ahead of her time.
Our chart wouldn’t have been complete without the famous Joan Jett, a legend of the real rock’n’roll scene of the 1980s. Born in 1958, she performed in two legendary bands, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, and The Runaways. She became a role model for numerous female guitarists, while her signature punk-look and leather pants inspired generations.
